Pacific Science Center

Seattle

CLIENT: Pacific Science Center
LANDMARK DESIGNATION: July 2010

Pacific Science Center selected NK to research and assess its iconic building and grounds at the Seattle Center as part of long-range planning for its 50th anniversary. The original design by Minoru Yamasaki for the 1962 World’s Fair includes dazzling white “space gothic” buildings surrounding a serene central courtyard of pools and fountains. During an 18-month effort, NK prepared a historic resources report to inventory existing historic materials and a Seattle Historic Landmark nomination that included the site, original building exteriors and two theater interiors. Pacific Science Center and the adjacent Space Needle are the only structures in Seattle to meet all six of the city’s criteria for landmark status.
