Sun East Cabin

Kittitas County, Wash.

GSF: 1,000
COST PER SQUARE FOOT: $95 (plus owner’s sweat equity)
COMPLETED: 2005

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Off-the-grid cabin

This custom three-bedroom, one-bath cabin is situated on 20 acres within a gated private development north of Ellensburg. Its large windows, lofted roofline, and elevation of 4,500 feet above sea level provide panoramic views of the surrounding hills, neighboring Wenatchee National Forest, and Mt. Rainier in the distance. Its frame was constructed of rough sawn Douglas Fir timbers from Southern Oregon, which are exposed throughout the open interior space. Because of its extremely private, remote location, the home is not connected to any utilities and is heated by both propane and wood-burning stoves, and power is supplied by a generator. Construction was completed in less than four months because the site is covered by snow for much of the year, making access a challenge.
