West Seattle Residence

Seattle

GSF: 2,500
COST PER SQUARE FOOT: $160 (plus owner’s sweat equity)
COMPLETED: 2002
CONTRACTOR: Schulte Construction; Powell Custom Homes & Renovations

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Preservation and expansion

This West Seattle craftsman bungalow underwent a substantial expansion and modernization while maintaining much of its original character and architectural detail. Only 600 square feet of the original house was kept and 1,900 square feet of usable living space was added during the remodel. With the installation of north-facing skylights and energy-efficient windows and the reconfiguration of the floor plan eliminating the need for hallways, the home achieves significant energy savings by maximizing passive heating and cooling. The end result is a home that is comfortable and feels much larger on the inside than its footprint would suggest.
