Passive House Senior Housing. New construction plus retrofit of historic school.
This adaptive reuse of an elementary school will provide 55 units of affordable senior housing to Glassport, Pennsylvania and surrounding communities. Both the new and retrofitted portions of the building will be built to the rigorous Passive House standard, making the project a model of healthy living, energy efficiency, and environmentally sustainable design.
The development brings a unique focus on the health and wellbeing of the residents, the history of Glassport and the history of the school. A healing garden near the entrance of the building will connect residents with the restorative influence of plants, sky, and nature. The large site will also be embellished with edible landscaping including an asparagus bed, blueberries, raspberries, and apple trees. Raised beds will be provided for vegetable gardens during the summer months. Stormwater will be captured in bio-swales that contribute to the feeling of lush plantings. Artifacts and exhibits featuring the history of the school and Glassport will weave throughout the project.
